Nimbus cloud 9 underlay for Seagrass carpet???

Hi, I am asking for advice really. I have had two seagrass carpets on my stairs now for 18months and I am now in the position to get them laid.
I asked around and was informed that I need Nimbus Cloud 9 11m underlay - is this correct!! and that it need to be glued to the floor and then the carpet glued to the underlay? - is this correct!!

If so does any one know what glue to use and wher to find the cheapest Nimbus cloud 9 11m underlay - seemed a good idea at the time!!!!

Many thanks for any advice on this

Unfortunately, yes. Seagrass is cheap to buy, but not to lay. It needs to be laid on special underlay (not necessarily Nimbus), the underlay glued down and the seagrass glued on top. Then you have to wait for the seagrass to acclimatise for several days before it gets its final trim. Taking all this into account, it's one of the most expensive floorings if it's done right. As a matter of interest, were you given any advice about using it on stairs? I've sold floorcoverings, and seagrass was specifically advised against use on a stairs because it's a very smooth and slippery fibre. (It's also hell to clean because any dirt gets right into it, so I'd never actually use it myself).

Anyhow, there are several stockists of Nimbus cloud 9 on the web, including these - http://www.ezcarpets.co.uk/underlaypage.htm

  • I work in flooring industry and have always been told that seagrass shouldn't be used on stairs.

The other thing to note is that if you have cats they will use as a scratch mat and make a mess of it.

Cloud 9 underlay is fine on a domestic flat floor, but I haven't used it on stairs. The reason most carpet installers like it is because they can carry it easily whereas the other underlays are much heavier. As always when unsure ask the installer to confirm he has used Cloud 9 on stairs, under Seagrass, and see if he will take you to see the combination that has been in use for at least six to nine months.

  • Hi,

Many thanks for the advice, but I was not planning to use on the stairs the carpets are rollup and on my stairs as it is the only place that they will fit and not be too much in the way.
I am fitting the carpet in one of my downstairs rooms.

    Cheers
  • This is essentially the process that we use when installing this type of product. NB Make sure that your adhesive is compatible with your underlay. This really is a job for a pro!

Ah, that explains it. I thought from reading it that you had it loose laid on the stairs and were now going to have it fixed in place!

As L_G says, it's a job for a pro. It really is a very difficult covering to lay and make look good. Dunno why Ann Maurice always picked it!
