My insurer in France, MAAF is part of the MMA group which is listed as a member of MID.
Have just had an Email from stuartcollins.com who say they can insure us, recognize the French NCB and unlimited European cover with a policy underwritten by AXA for considerably less than Sagas quote. Have just faxed the forms back to them will ring in the morning to check.0 -
If your having problems finding a broker to accept your foreign no claims bonus, try ringing a broker who are located in a military town eg Colchester, Catterick, Aldershot, Portsmouth etc etc.
They are used to having military clients who have been posted abroad eg Germany, Belgium and Holland whose no claims bonus often comes from a foreign Insurer. They will instantly know of Insurers who will accept the no claims bonus and will be able to provide a quotation.
You only have to stay with the Insurer they quote for one year and then you will have UK no claims bonus that everyone will accept.
You can probably find a broker in one of military areas using this tool http://www.biba.org.uk/ConsumerHome.aspx0 -
Surely if the car was legal in France then under EU law it must also be legal in any other EU country whether that's just over the border in Belgium or Spain or just over the channel in the UK.
EU law trumps UK law every time I thought0 -
The EU rules on cars are roughly.
If you temporarily import a private car from one member state to another you are exempt from local taxes in the country they have temporarily imported that car provided importer has their normal residence in another member state. The period of temporary import must be less than 6 months in any twelve month period.

The EU Third Directive on Insurance does give provision for Insurers from one EU member state to undertake insurance in another member state subject to certain rules.

If the French car insurance policy (MAAF) your were going to take out for driving in the UK with your UK registered car was underwritten by MMA, then you would probably be fine in that case.Have just had an Email from stuartcollins.com who say they can insure us, recognize the French NCB and unlimited European cover with a policy underwritten by AXA for considerably less than Sagas quote. Wow, well done.

We are now fully insured through Stuart Collins of Swansea, the policy is extended foreign use scheme with AXA Insurance. Strange that AXA would not sell me a policy like this when I contacted them directly. Unlimited EU use, green card and protected NCB, exactly what we wanted! Now need a new ink cartridge to print it all out as they have just sent the full policy on an Email.0
