Phoning GF when shes in Dominican Republic

Hi money savers.
My girl friend is going to the dominican republic next week, for two weeks. Its the longest we have been apart in a few years, and she wants to talk to me practicaly every day.
I'm trying to find the cheapest way to do this, and am struggling. It looks like even the international sim cards charge to recieve incoming calls. So this isnt really much of an option.
I cant find any information about buying a sim card out there and not really sure if she'll be heading into the areas where she could buy it.
I'm starting to think the cheapest method would be for me to call her phone in the hotel the cheapest method i have found for doing this, is using 0844calls.co.uk and dialing their access number, which then makes the call cost 3p/min.
Does any one have any advice for the best way of doing this? Does 0844 work well? Does it cost more to call hotels or will it be a standard dominican call rate? Is there any way of doing it with a mobile, she has contracts with t-mobile and o2.
Kind regards
Stuart

The various 0844 callthrough numbers are mostly good with occasional patchy quality. If one is a bit dodgy try another from the MSE Callchecker.
Calling the hotel room sounds a good idea, but calling a Dominican mobile is actually not that much more - only 4 or 5 pence with those 0844 numbers. And if she were to leave the O2 mobile with you, the 0844 calls come from inclusive minutes on most contract tariffs.
The mobile network there is Orange Dominicana
http://www.orange.com.do/
planes > Orange card > tarifas shows local calls at about 12 pence a minute, to USA the same, and to UK about 17 p/min, looks like per second billing
I suggest she makes a quick call to you, then you call back.
The phone she takes needs to be unlocked from the UK network. There are pinned threads in the Phones Board where you can ask help with this; the simplest ones to do are Nokia, and people on the thread can work out the specific unlock code for you.0 -
Do you have broadband internet access, have you tried Skype? It lets you make landline calls from your PC, at local rate charges.
I dunno how much it costs to call DR but it won't be a bad rate0 -

I'd have checked but the corporate IT monkeys have banned the skype website0
