Off road/Laid up car insurance

Hi

Does anyone know any insurers that would insure a car off the road i.e. just for fire and theft? I'm taking my car off the road for a while and have rung round a few with no luck and there's very little information on the internet about this but I'm told 'laid up' policies do exist. (It will be kept in a garage.)

Thanks

You need to ask your existing insurer, who will often allow a part rebate of premiums against a future renewal if you lay the car up for a while.
  • My insurance is due to run out shortly though which is when I'm going to take it off the road and my existing insurer (Hastings) say they don't do it. Most insurers I've called have said they only do it within existing policies. It's odd as I would have thought insuring a car kept in a locked garage would be quite low risk for them.

direct line do offer laid up cover, but not from the incet,so you would have to policy "live"etc for a few days, then call to lay up the cover.

They probably won't do it from the outset because it might be rather common for people to insure cars which are useless and then for those cars to "accidentally" catch on fire/get stolen/whatever.

Insurers don't like to insure cars which are not evidently roadworthy and the best way to demonstrate this is for them to be taxed, MOT'd and on the road being used. Cars shut away in garages might not be roadworthy but it's impossible to prove that once it's been stolen/caught on fire.
  • Ah yeah suppose that makes sense.
