Are all car fuels the same?

I’ve been informed by my IAM driving instructor that there are differences in fuels from different suppliers, Shell and BP have higher quality fuels he claims than, say, Tesco, (where I normally buy due to convenience and club card points) I thought that all fuel came out of the same tap as it were – your comments please
