Car insurance with free breakdown

Last year I took out a car insurance policy with Alliance and Leicester. The main factor for choosing them was a special offer that included free breakdown cover worth £66. The offer specifically stated that it was valid, not just for 1 year, but also for every year you renewed with them. I thought this was a good deal so I signed up and got my free breakdown cover.
When my renewal quote arrived this year (now from Santander) I was happy with the amount so I renewed the policy. My renewal docs arrived but there was nothing about car breakdown cover. So I rang them to ask why and they said they were not aware of the offer. They said it must have been a one year only deal that Alliance and Leicester had offered. I had no way of proving that the offer I signed up to was ongoing for as long as you stayed with them. So no free breakdown cover, which is annoying as it is the only reason I renewed the insurance policy.
Clearly the terms of the deal went missing along with A&L. I just wondered if anyone else had experienced the same thing?
Thanks.
