Cancelling an online subscription at the banks end (Halifax) problem

I played the Irish lotto. I think i was 'done' as i did it through http://www.irishlotto.net/ which meant the lowest amount i could play was 39EUR for 2 games of 4 draws.

I've since been told i could've done the same on: http://www.lotto.ie/ for cheaper - but this didn't show on googles first page when i searched.

ANYWAY

I played for one time only & my games passed.

I THEN get an email yesterday to say my subscription will be renewed. I immediately fired one back to say i wasn't aware it would auto-renew & once my games passed, i thought that was it. Told them i want my subscription cancelled & any money refunded to me.

No reply today.

So i call Halifax to see if i can block it at the banks end. I phone through, go through the options on the phone & then the phone just goes, not dead, but silent.

Can't afford 39EUR to come out again as i wasn't planning on it.

Any ideas on what i can do?

  • Did you put the payment through on your debit card or is it done by direct debit?

Halifax's lines have been super busy with the lack of staff with the weather this last week

Payment was through the debit card. Not direct debit.

& thanks, i never thought of that.
  • There is not alot the bank can do to block the renewal as it's a recurring debit transaction on the PAN number. Sometimes cancelling the card can work but it's not guaranteed. You will prob have to wait on the company getting back to you and hopefully their either don't renew or give you a refund

Write to the Company and your bank cancelling the subscription. The FSA says in those circumstances the bank should not allow any more payments to be made. Any further transactions would be unauthorised and reclaimable.

K, thanks anyway. I'll just sit it out. I've emailed them again saying i was waiting on a response (as the site says 24hours & you'll receive a reply).

Seems a bit cack that some person seems to have to authorize your cancellation.

The lotto site emailed me yesterday to say payment will be taken tomorrow.

Any letter to either wouldn't reach them until Thursday at the earliest which would be too late.

Can you provide a link referencing that specifically for debit card transactions?

Ask Halifax about Visa debit card chargebacks. If the staff member sounds confused speak to somebody senior.
  • The current procedure for charge backs is that Halifax can dispute the transaction after 30 days with the company but the option is there if you get no luck with them

Cheers guys. As it is, they fiiiiiiiiiiiinally got back in touch (after the 24hours they promised they'd get in touch within i must add). They say the subscription is now cancelled.

I'll not be playing that game again that's for sure. Thanks again for your help.
