Help needed brand new flat, faulty bathroom!

I bought a brand new flat 5 months ago. The flat is a new build on the back of an existing property, which was newly converted into 4 flats. Mine happens to be rear ground floor and a new extension. I was aware that the flat was classed as a conversion and not a new build and that because of this there was no NHBC insurance. I wasn't too concerned as the flat was new and I expected everything to work.
After a couple of months, I realised the tiles behind the shower seemed to be moving, as time has gone on, these have gradually started falling off and damp can be seen on the plaster board down the side of the bath. I contacted the developer last week and he said he would send the original plumber to have a look and they would try and sort the problem. The plumber came and said there was no problem with the pipes or shower, but water had got down through the tiles, made the plaster board damp and therefore caused the tiles to come lose.
The developer contacted me today and said that they would not be doing the work, despite the fact it seems to be poor workmanship on their part. I have only lived in the brand new flat 5 months and I already have to have a wall in the bathroom replaced, the bathroom re tiled and all the fixtures and fittings removing and re fitting....quite a large job. I would have never completed the purchase if I had known this was the case. I was a first time buyer and bought a new flat as I had no extra money to do any work on anything. Feel very unhappy and no idea how I will pay for the work. Where do I stand, do I have consumer rights? Surely the bathroom is not fit for purpose??!!

Not sure of your legal rights, it does seem poor workmanship is at fault but you may have to go to small claims court to make that stick.

Shower should not ideally be backed with plasterboard but with something water resistant like this ... http://www.wedi.co.uk/tileback.php

You could try a claim for negligence as the work wasn't done to the standard reasonably expected of a professional builder?
