Must it be fresh? Morrisons had frozen turkeys which were basted and had giblets on special offer today for £8 for a 4kg one. They also had larger ones. They had turkey crowns for £8. too. I thought they were very good prices!

We vary from year to year as to whether we have fresh or frozen. Last year we had a fresh turkey and paid well over £30 and it really was not worth the extra money.

I cooked a large frozen one for New Years Eve do and had quite a crowd round and they all kept saying "you can always tell a fresh bird can't you?":D:D

I always thaw mine slowly in a cool place and make loads of lovely things to go with it. Homemade stuffing, chestnuts, bacon nibbles, homemade bread sauce & gravy, masses of steamed veggies, roasties rubbed in mustard etc etc.

thank you- it needs to be a fresh one that i can pick up a couple of days before as i only have a small freezer and there is no way that it would fit, whereas i have 2 fridges. Couple of years ago Somerfield had them for £10

Thanks again, if I spy anything on offer, I shall come back and update

    Cheers, QoC

I got an Aldi one last year, there seemed to be plenty available, there was no rush and no selling out.
  • Have you tried a local butcher?
My mum orders the turkey and various other pieces of meat several weeks before (we have a turkey but I'm sure they do crowns and other variations, ours also sells game). It gets picked up on the 23rd or early morning on the 24th and is kept out in the garage - nice and cold.
the prices are very reasonable, meat is local and good quality.
We're all off to my auntie's this year so no peeling spuds and sprouts on Christmas Eve ( always accomplished before we go to the village pub, saves having to get up at the crack of dawn the next day after a few lemonades!

our local co-op should be getting them in this week and then will reduce what is left on Christmas Eve so will be keeping an eye out! I already have my Christmas Eve pork and Christmas day turkey and gammon in the freezer :)
