Cracked Windscreen and Humble Pie!
I did consider not mentioning this on here especially as I have been an advocate of the following method of defrosting a windscreen......:o
I was not in a particualr rush this morning it was 10am but was still cold (didn't realise until later how cold it was -9/-10) but needless to say the windows were well frosted so I started the car
Not a poblem thinks I just fill a 2 litre milk carton with hot water from tap and mixed with 25% ice cold water from tap so it as not hot (the water was just above tepid ) .
Needess to say there was a pin head sized stone chip on the screen just under the passenger wiper blade and I now have a crack wich was 4 inches long and is now about 15 inches long heading to the drivers side.
From what I can see the key thing is any slight imperfection is likely to do this is at these extreme temperatures.
So I will eat humble pie.....:o!!!!!!

It's very rare for someone to admit to being wrong on an internet forum, so you get my respect for that.
Do you have windscreen cover?0 -
Doh!
Sorry to hear that - but I'm bigging you up for admitting it.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
Hopefully you can save other people from the same thing happening to them
I know I won't be trying this method now.

I think nearly every chip I've had cracked in this sort of weather if it was going to. A bit of water gets into the chip, freezes, expands, crack appears. Everything near the edge cracks eventually anyway.
I just live with them until the MOT, if it's not in the way. Or wait until I get three or four large chips, then get a new windscreen.

I was watching my neighbour last night use her wipers to remove snow from her windscreen. Went over with the scraper, offered to scrape it for her. She said it was okay, she was just removing the snow before defrosting the ice....
A few seconds later her wiper motor died.0 -
Looks like it will be fixed on Thursday morning. AutoGlass were quoting 17 December whch I said was unacceptable.
I really wanted to put the work the way of a small company who helped me out with a rental car and a chipped screen for £10 plus I delivered a screen for the guy on the way home. But these bigger companies seem to have it all sown up.
I can virtually guarantee though it would have cost the insurer less. The quote was £179 + VAT (Jeep Cherokee) and my excess is £75.0
