Really stupid question regarding survey

Hi guys,
We have just had our mortgage offered and we are over the moon. The property has been valued, and I am really sorry but do not understand if we should be getting a survey done, and who through?
It is a lease hold maisonette if that makes a difference? Can anyone best advise?
Thank you, and I dont know what I'd do without this board xxx

Protect yourselves by getting your own survey done. The valuation is just done for the Lender's benefit. Google RICS - their website has a guide to the different types of survey.0

Are you interested to know if it is about to fall down or not?
Are you interested to know about the general condition of the place?
I'm guessing "yes". But how interested? Enough to pay for a survey? That's up to you to decide.0 -
You could have go the lender's surveyor to do a more detailed survey for you at the same time as the valuation for the lender, but it is too late now. That's not a big problem - just look for local chartered surveyors in Google/Yell/Yellow Pages etc.
One thing you do need to realise is that normally they can look at the maisonette you are buying from the inside, but the building as a whole only from the outside so their comments about the building as a whole may be more limited because of problems in getting access to other parts of the building occupied by other people.RICHARD WEBSTER
As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.0
