I really want to open a pet shop!

I've run an online pet accessory etc business and it's cut throat! The big names and ebay and amazon can undercut you without blinking meaning you either sell at a loss or very small profit or you specialise in some products - then you have the problem of getting business for a new company that operates online only... there are too many wellknown large names out there...
I would do some serious market research before deciding on what to do...DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Hi Wilykit
My son is doing a National Diploma which he can then carry on to further education to train as a veterinary nurseHowever during the course he will have pet shop management training - wondering if this is something that may be of help to you? Maybe check out your local college and speak to a careers advisor who may be able to help put you on the right path
Good luck

been there, done it, got the t. shirt,
it nearly bankrupted us.....
if you have no financial commitments, basically living with parents etc, and have no living costs as such, then it might work for you, if you dont mind only taking a few quid out of the business, but if you expect to take out a proper full time wage.... then in all honesty forget it..
supermarkets, and pound shops etc are selling stuff cheaper than what you can buy them in the wholesalers for...
If you love the thought of working/selling pet foods etc, try and get a job in garden centre that has a pet department, or a large petstore, like pets at home etc...Work to live= not live to work0 -
It is a small business. The owner works there all the time and they employ staff on a part time basis on minimum wages. I would have thought it's a good for £70,000 investment. If I had the money and put it in the bank I'd be lucky to get £2,000 in interest. If I borrowed the entire amount against the house then it would only cost £3,000 per year for a profit of 32% of £200,000 and a full time job. £64,000 per year for what it a relatively unskilled job seems to me to be a good return. Yes GP does not include staff wages so if you did all the hours yourself then it's all yours.
Nor does it include rent, rates, utilities etc, and how can owner do 3 days on market stall and work in shop at same time. Can't see you could run shop single handedly. I'd be interested to know how £200K splits between shop and market stall. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
I have tried getting jobs there cooltrikerchick but there aren't any!
To be fair, Iim not in a position right now it's just something I have liked the thought of, for a while I have liked the thought of having my own businessThe more one gets to know of men, the more one values dogs.0
