Hi we have a guest coming from Texas tomorrow evening and she will be staying for supper. I very much want to cook her something typically English, but we will be out for the evening and hoping to eat on our return.

So I need an idea for an English meal that can be slow cooked - I am trying to avoid Beef (since she is from Texas and they do steak better than we do :o) ... so any ideas please?

edit: I do not have a slow cooker - but I do need the recipe to be cooked slowly over about 3 hours while we are out of the house! :D thanks x

Lamb is not a very common meat in many places in the states....so can you do something with that in slow cooker...maybe shoulder with lots of root veg??

  • What about Lancashire hotpot?
  • I would go with a slow cooked leg of lamb studded with rosemary and garlic
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

OOh - good ideas already, although I must clarify that I do not have a slow cooker - but I do need the recipe to be cooked slowly (have now edited my original post :o)

Lancashire Hot Pot sounds like a good idea to start my research .... I shall try to find a recipe unless anyone has a good one / can link to a tried and tested one...

edit: hmmm - sadly no, not suitable since it needs an hour after you take the lid off. We will be getting in about 9pm and I would be starving by 10!!

    ...
  • Cant you make it and cook it through and then just do a reheat when you come in

It doesn't get much more English than fish and chips!

Do you have a deep fat fryer? I know you said you wanted it to be slow cooked, but if you did fish and chips you could have a lot of it done in advance - mushy peas made ready to be reheated, chips had their first fry and put in the fridge ready to go back in the fryer, batter made. You could have dinner on the table ten minutes after you get home.
