Walking my dog on the lead

We are in the same situation, on day 6 of lead walking after neutering. My dog has been bombing around the house in short bursts a lot more and will bug us to play with him every second we are home. Can't wait until saturday to let him run free again and tire himself out!
Yours will get used to a new routine, just keep him occupied with other things.0 -
This is an excellent product and method for walking your dog on lead.

Re the neutering. I would wait until your dog is fully mature before having him castrated.
I'm not sure why some vets are pushing for doing it to puppies. Perhaps it's an easier operation for them but from a behavioural point of view it is best left for a while.
Apart from anything else you could have him walking nicely on a lead by then.A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.0 -

I thought that he was fully mature now? they said that they wont do it if his balls havent dropped and he hast lost all his teeth..
My friend has a 6 month old female sprocker, so I dont want to leave it too late!:o0 -
I cant help with the snip info, never had a dog who's been snipped, grey was already b*****kless when we got him
lol
but I will say, never put a halti on a puppy, the joints and bones are still growing and easily damaged. A halti pulls the head down to the side when the dog pulls, straining on a neck in this position can cause damage to the joints and ligaments.
Have you tried clicker training?? Or if your happy to put up with the pulling you could try a lead with a bungee in it, like the Cujo Ezydog lead, havent tried it myself but a lot of friends have and says its brilliant, basically it just takes the shock out of it when they lunge and pull

I have tried the bungie thing it was crap - it just basically makes it less uncomfortable for him - I hate the pulling !
Not tried the clicker thing yet - I might try that one!
I have been trying the sharp snap back of the lead along with treats and praise to make him pay attention to me - it works, but then he forgets and does it again and also nobody else can walk him unless they know what to do as it just confuses him..
He is such a lovely dog and I love our walks once we get to the field/riverside - but the lead part ruins the whole thing for me (and it cant be great for him too, walking along getting bollocked every time he pulls me over!)0 -

At 6 months old he is still a puppy and nowhere near mature. Minimum of 12 months of age but better to wait until 18 months for neutering. Just my humble opinion but who else's would I give.
When your friends female dog is in season she would be wise to keep her away from males whether neutered or not.
Neutered dogs can still mate and tie with female dogs and if they are newly done they won't be firing blanks yet and even if they are she could still have a false pregnancy which is quite distressing for a young b i t c h.A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.0 -
Perhaps try a Canny Collar? I can walk our rottweiler with it and not get pulled over

clicker training is great, worked on my working husky (she is taught to pull as hard as she can while running!)
get a clicker, they're pretty cheap, and some small treats, the smaller the better and the healthier the better because you use a lot of treats with clicker training.
1st you have to condition the dog to the click, get the dog in front of you and click, as you click, shove a treat under his nose and let him have it. Keep doing this click/treat about 15 times, then let him get bored and walk off, once he's lost interest click again, if he looks over expecting a treat then you're ready to start training. If he doesnt then do another 15 repetitions of click/treat
Then start your training in the garden 1st, clip his lead on and start walking, as soon as he pulls turn in the opposite direction, as he's just behind your leg, click and treat. if he stays there, click/treat again, if he pulls ahead, turn again, then click/treat as he gets to your leg. Keep doing this until he stays by your leg all the time.
Then go out for your normal walk and do the same thing, but you probably wont get far because you'll be alking up and down in front of your house lol.
theres some good vids on youtube if you search 'clicker training loose leash walking'I'm not a bloke! :rotfl:My real name is Sinead, Sid is my nickname :rotfl:0 -
