Moving to America

My husband who is 42yo, 13yo son and myself who is 34yowould love to live in America. We applied for immigration about 4 years ago. My mum and stepdad live out there already and my mum is our sponsor for immigration. I know that it is a long process. We are both professional people. I am a book keeper and general administrator and my husband is a commercial vehicle body repairer. We have approx £80k equity in our house.

Here are my questions:

Could we skip the immigration and apply for work permits in America?
Would we be able to buy a house whilst not being US citizens?
Would we be able to have dual nationality as long as we liked?

Has any of you out there had any experience of this kind of thing because there are probably an squillion more questions I need to be asking.

Any help or advice would be more than welcome.

Good morning: Take a look at https://www.britishexpats.com : the site has very active forums on immigration and living in various countries including the States.

    Good luck.

  • I can answer at least one of your questions. You can easily buy a house I know because I have bought and sold them there. I have never wanted to emigrate but I do stay for longer than 90 days at a time so my husband and I have visas but are not allowed to work there. All the rules have changed recently and although we have had visas for years and never been interveiwed last year we had to attend the US Embassy in London. We had to take evidence that we were self supporting, had property in the UK and intended to reurn to the UK after a period of not more than 180 days (6 months). We also had our fingerprints taken. Then they renewed our visas. For anyone reading this that does not know, you only need a visa (if you have a UK passport) if you plan to stay for longer than 90 days at any one time. Therefore a fortnight in Orlando will not need a visa.
