    A few addendums and corrections:

5* and 5- faults: These are actually caused by the meter decomissioning itself back to it's initial factory state. It looses all settings and shuts down.
Call help: Can be any one or arround 30 different issues, ranging from anti-tamper and valve incorrectly shutting, to valve failing to shut fully, delayed valve response, flow going backwards, etc. They all need an engineer.
Card fail: This could have various numbers after it or even no number. It still means you need a new card.
Electric error when key inserted: As a general rule, erros begining with D are key faults and with E are meter faults. Ones with just numbers show you have an old meter and could be either...

Perhaps an edit for meter faults to say an issue to be dealt with by your supplier rather than emergency as folks tend to think to call the gas emergency service only to be told to call their gas supplier/ also if someone has just moved into a property and there is no gas then either the supplier or a gsr has to ensure it is uncapped and turned on first before the gas emergency service will attend as capped supplies have to be eliminated as cause.

Some of the suppliers are do say they are closed on their out of hours recordings but if you stay on the line say and do nothing they may give you the number for their metering people at the end of the recording.

Also there should be a contact number on the back of your card that you put into the meter though these are not always up to date.

Turn off the control valve at the meter
    Extinguish all naked flames
Open doors and windows for ventilation
Ensure they do not use any electrical switches

then call the gas emergency service 0800 111 999

we are open 24 hrs a day so do not think you will have to call in the morning if you smell gas at night or go off to work and call from there, as there is always someone available to answer your call and engineers to visit to ensure your safety day or night.

If you do not know how to turn your meter off then the agent will tell you how to, if the handle is stiff or not moving at all do not force it but tell the agent and they will arrange it so the engineer they are sending to you will sort that out.

Perhaps folks who have pre payment meters should request manuals or instructions for use of the them as sure would be of use to have one

You can do. We have instruction booklets that frontline can send out.

great perhaps an idea for all suppliers is when a new occupier registers at a property with a etm they are sent a manual with their welcome pack and encouraged to read it in the blurb in the covering letter
