Yep - did that too! That was easy, it was finding dishwasher salt that was the problem.

Went to Waitrose again today and found the salt so thanks for the advice - bought the smaller jar as I was walking cos of the snow. Filled the machine though got a little worried about the water draining out but the manual said that's normal. Then used the machine so all's well.

Many thanks to all who took the time to help me.
    :T

Good to hear you got some salt into it. Now you can spend the time you used to spend washing up......clearing snow as you won't have any salt to help melt it.:rotfl:

the salt you put in a dishwasher is to REPLENISH the softning crystals, not adding it regardless of water hardness will damage the crystals and render them useless, so by not adding it you are damaging part of your dishwasher(crystals will eventually break down and appear in your wash), tablets containing salt are nothing more than a marketing ploy and serves no purpose whatsoever, the salt is only usefull if added to the softner's crystals, adding salt to the wash is no use whatsoever as it cannot get to the crystals, while we are on the subject all the dishwasher cleaner tablets/liquids supposed to clean your dishwasher are also a big ripoff, i have taken apart and repaired thousands of dishwashers and never found any grease in the drain system, the reason is that every time you use your dishwasher you add detergent to clean the plates/cups anyway in the form of a dishwasher tab and flush it away with hot water(which cleans the system)

They don't make this very clear. I have always used salt in my dishwasher and it's still going strong after eighteen years.

We use own label salt from ASDA, it seems to work fine, around here we have very hard water.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • go to a local plumbers merchant and buy a 25kg bag of salt granules for around £6 - as used in domestic water softeners. will last for years, but needs to be stored somewhere dry. dishwasher tabs and rinse aid - get from Aldi for half the price of 'finish' and just as good.

Are the cleaners supposed to descale the machine as well as clean it though? I'd never used them till my machine blocked at the pump and gave me a big repair bill, though did wonder if my use of the eco wash a bit too often made that happen... I don't think I ran it hot enough to clean it properly each time...? Plus I live in a very hard water area. But the dishwasher cleaner did leave it nice and clean and smelling better even if nothing else!

What is the difference between dishwasher salt and normal salt while we're on the subject? and is supermarket own brand as good as any?
