Iphone 3GS and ACER laptop incompatibility?

I bought an Iphone earlier in the year and initialised it with my ACER laptop. Since then plugging it in causes my laptop to literally crash. On the advice of Apple, I plugged it into my husband's laptop (also an ACER). CRASH! After hours of "help" from Apple, which didn't work, I requested a new phone. The replacement initialised on my laptop and then cause the laptop to CRASH. I have noticed on the Apple help forum other complaints of this nature regarding ACER, and have posted to it, but no solution as yet has been offered. This is frustrating , not to mention time consuming. This phone was supposed to make my life and work more efficient! Any advice?:(
