The Nikon D3100 seems to getting a lot of good reviews, and it seems quite user friendly

I would also consider the Canon 500D, which is a good quality entry level DSLR

There are also entry level models from Sony and Pentax. You really need to get to a camera store and handle a few models, see which feels best to you, they are all capable of very good image quality.

if you can get your hands on a Nikon D40 (may be ebay) it is an excellent camera. Its only 6 MP but its perfect for beginners and to be hoenst unless one regularly prints sizes bigger than A3 than there is 6MP should be more than enough.

The D40x is available now and seems to be the best of the entry level cameras, if all you want it for is stills photography.
