I don't know if this applies for all insurance companies, but something similar happened to a friend who lost her iPod which was given to her as a gift, she had to get a letter signed by the person who'd given her the iPod stating that it was given as a gift and had originally cost X amount. Could you do this? I know you bought the phone rather than getting it as a gift, but if the person you bought it from could write a similar letter they may be able to accept that (especially if the person you bought it from still has any proof of purchase, bank statement or the like?).0

ask your friend if they have it, if not ask if they have the serial number, original packing etc this can be traced by apple0

Does your friend have their proof of purchase? That; together with a hand written receipt from them should suffice.0 -
