Help with acccompat.txt problem please

Two days ago I had an error message 'i.e encountered a problem and needs to close' whenever I tried to connect to the internet. Then it done the 'error reporting thing'

I found that if I quickly changed my homepage I could access the internet but now today I cannot do that as it has speeded up the crashing time.

I can however access the internet if I have turned of add-ons which I have done now.

It says it is an appcompat.txt error.

I have followed the instructions on the first page of the spyware/virus removal thread and ad adware found a couple of things but that has made no difference.Nothing was found on the other scans, it was all clear.

I got as far as the Panda scan but I can't download it as I have add-ons disabled and I appear to need these to download the file. I did manage to do the 32bit scan on home call and that was clear.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what I can try next please.

The file "appcompat.txt" should contain more detailed information on the error which you are receiving. Have a read through the file and see if it names any specific programs or add-on which may be causing the crash.

You could also try using a different browser such as Firefox or Chrome and see if the problem still occurs.
  • I have tried to open the file however it says the system cannot find the path specified. When I have a look at the error message details it gives slightly different file details...different numbers before the accompat.txt bit.

The file path will change as a new one will likely be generated every time you see it. Without getting into the file to see what's causing the problem I don't think it can be resolved.

Open notepad and try to open the file from there by browsing through files until you find it. Remember that part of the file path like "DOCUME~1" is actually "Documents and Settings", there may be other parts of the path which are obscure like this.

    The file will exist somewhere.

    Best of luck.
  • Thanks for that, I will have another bash at finding it.

If you can find what's in that file then the chances are someone here will be able to help you fix what's causing it.

    Again, good luck. :D
