Just to let everyone know the new store opened today. They're currently giving a free re-usable bag, one per customer (not very exciting I know). Petrol station is at far end of car park and petrol was 117.9, didn't catch the diesel price though sorry. It's a 24 hour Extra store and was billed to be bigger than the Newport Extra store (which it probably is). Cafe/restaurant sells Costa Coffee. There is a Tesco Direct desk (at which you can collect online orders) and an optician, but no Pharmacy or Photo processing (there's a Pharmacy near Tesco itself anyway).

Can't help but feel they're taking over South Wales :D

i don't know why. yes tesco open a lot of shops but lets face it if people do the majority of their shopping there then any business will expand.

i've never really bought into this 'tesco is evil and trying to take over the world' attitude. customers vote with their feet. the popular businesses get bigger and the less popular ones close down.

    basic economics surely?

I guess where it becomes an issue is when they abuse their market dominance by using anti-competitive practices, e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-competitive TBH I think there's more problems with that sort of thing going on in the energy market at the moment.

The thing that concerns me about the Risca Tesco deal though is Tesco have to modernise the old cinema building that has lain derelict for over 20 years. Apparently one company had agreed to do it up and pulled out, presumably the expected expense rose for them. They intend to put a Tesco Express store there http://www.southwalesargus.co.uk/news/8244350.Supermarket_plan_will_revamp_Risca_cinema/ Once that store is there I have no doubt businesses like the Spar, and potentially the newsagent will feel the pressure and close up shop.

It's surprising the main petrol station in Risca is selling petrol at 121.9 and round the corner it can be had for 117.9, 4p/litre less (£1.60 for 40 litres), but people still go there.
