Buy a Kindle, or i-pad?

I'm thinking I'd quite like a book reader, but can't decide whether to get a dedicated book reader, or go for an i-pad or Google android tablet.

I wonder what people think of either or?

The Kindle should be viewed as being just a book reader and MP3 player as the web browsing is pretty rudimentary and it won't run any apps. If you need more then you should look at getting an iPad or other tablet either as a replacement or in addition to a Kindle.

You also need to consider whether or not you need 3G as it doesn't come cheap on either.

Now is not the best time to buy a tablet as there will almost certainly be several iPad competitors and probably an iPad 2 arriving early next year.

I use my ipad as a book reader, and love it.

If you intend to use the device for surfing, emails, playing games etc, the ipad is the product to buy. You can download the kindle app, and purchase books from Amazon and other suppliers.

The ipad is larger than the kindle and Sony ereader, also much more expensive, but in my opinion, definitely worth the extra.

    Good luck

Depends what you want to use it for. If it is just for reading than a Kindle, or other ebook reader would be the way to go (better screen for reading, cost, longer battery life).

If you want something that will also access the internet and play movies, then you could consider a tablet (including ipads here), however it may not be as nice on your eyes if you are reading for a long time.

I read in the evenings using my ipad and never experienced any problems. The print can be adjusted to whatever you find suitable.

If you want a "book" or near book, with little worries about running out of battery when reading, and being able to read in almost any conditions where a normal book would be readable then the Kindle is the best option.

If you want to be able to watch video, play games, browse the web etc but don't mind the much much shorter battery life, the increased chance of not being able to read it comfortably for long periods at a time, and the much higher cost (3-4x) the ipad is the best choice.

Personally I have a Sony ebook reader (had it for a couple of years), and find it so much more comfortable to read for any length of time than any PC/Laptop type display, and the Kindle 3 has an even better display (my brother has one).
  • To sum up.

    Books > Kindle
    Not Books > iPad.

Reading on a backlight screen is awful and impossible outdoors in most lights.

I think on balance the Kindle is what I shall get as it's reading that I want to do, what made me decide is the back light, and what I think is great about a book reader is the weight. I have OA in both hands and holding a heavy book is near impossible.

    Thanks again.

I have O/A too and you will find the Kindle is perfect for holding with weak hands I especially like it for reading in bed I can hold it with one hand and turn the pages with just a movement of my thumb... also reading outside in bright sunshine is an advantage too.. the battery lasts for a month or more before recharging and I buy the books right there on the Kindle and they download in seconds...
