Don't go for an Astra - known lots of people with lots of problems, with engine & suspension etc.

Mondeos are bargain basement as no-one seems to wnat them.
My Dad bought a R reg Turbo Diesel for £800 last year with 100,000 on the clock. It does close to 50 mpg & does all he needs. I've known taxi drivers get a good 450,000 out of these so he's a long way to go before it's clapped out.

I got a fiat stilo on ebay, prices are very competitve for what is an equivalent to a civic.

I've had a 5 dr corsa (1.2 merit) for years. Its been a great little car. Its never let me down on those damp mornings, passed its MOT most years first time and its cheap to run. Its good for space, especially if you put the back seat down. I think they hold their price well too.
