McAfee & windows defender. Question

I have both and use them both for scanning I subscribe to McAfee every year my question is. Is it worth subscribing to McAfee or shall i just scan with defender as it's a built in program and costing me nothing.

dump both, get Avast or Avira (both are free however you should only ever run one resident scanner due to conflicts hence the or), and download Malwarebytes Anti-malware for extra on demand scanning (also free but no resident scanner so no conflicts)

Well you can be sure that McAfee won't stop anything. gonzo's advice is good-use Avira, Avast, or MSE (or Kaspersky is free with Barclays online banking).

sorry i just read that and my initial through was who told you that, i bet it was the sales person in PC World! in which case of course they would tell you a free one isnt any good and that you have to pay for something.

but anyways onto being helpful, Avira has one of the highest detection rates around although has a bug screen which pops up once a day asking you to buy the premium product, Avast has slightly lower detection rates but only requires a once a year free registration, both will give (depending on the tests you look at) as good or much better detection rates than McAfee and you will find that both use much less system resources so should speed up your computer in the process

No it was a friend i use to work with who told me about the freebies not stopping Trojans. The other half had dozens on her lappy and my friend at work repaired it for her it was then i asked about the free one we both had and that's what i got told.
I went straight to a well known shop dealing in computers and peripherals bought McAfee and installed it. I'M pleased with McAfee up to now had it for over a year but was just wandering why the need for two. I suppose it's double prtection.

It's not double protection. 2 AV's will just screw up everything, as they effectively fight one another. And the good free ones will stop most things (not AVG Free).
If you buy from PCW then they will sell you Norton or McAfee because that's what makes them the most money.

I have turned my windows firewall off as recomended so there is no conflict and my McAfee firewall is takeing care of this. I always do two virus checks full scans twice a week with both Mc and w.d at the same time.
Incidently it was AVG free that we both had when the other half got the Trojens

Windows Defender is not an AV progam, it's an anti-malware program.
And with the introduction of MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials), it's effectively obsolete.

disable defender realtime scanning, uninstall mcafee with removal tool, enable windows firewall, install avast free and malwarebytes (both free), and your machine will probably be a lot faster, with better protection.

All antivirus scanners scan for trojans, but the one you had obviously missed it

awww...c'mon matey, did you miss that it was AVG they had - no wonder it missed the trojans
