Did I break it?

Friend asked me to help sorting some emails on his business machine, as his secretary left last week and replacing her is taking a while.
When I got there, pc was on but screen was blank, reboot didn't work but noticed disc in drive, removed that and pc booted fine.
While checking emails, norton flashed up it's threat warning 3 times so I decided to download and run malwarebytes and then to do virus scan/spybot and ccleaner.
Malwarebytes found 3 threats and removed them, but then it asked for reboot and the trouble really started!
It gets through memtest, then stops for a few secs on a screen with:
oddo : sony dvd (etc etc)
press any key to continue.

Whether I press key or not screen goes blank and stays blank.
Have tried: boot into all forms of safe mode, no difference, screen stays blank.
Resetting boot options in bios to default, no difference.
Checked all cables inside and out for loose connections.
System is running xp pro and they have no disc...

If anyone could help it would be great, this has me stumped.

You say you have tried safe mode, so you must be able to get to the boot menu. Have you tried 'last known good' - this should undo the changes that have just been done, and may at least get you booting, so you can have a proper look at the mbam logfile, and then try a more detailed fix.

I've tried all options in boot menu and everything just leads to a black screen after I select the option.
Would sort of like to fix this myself if possible without costing a very small business money they can't afford, as I feel it was probably Malwarebytes that did the dmg and it's therefore my fault.
  • Any idea what was on the disk you took out??

It was a CD catalogue of some sort from a supplier.
