DO NOT be pressured into buying a pup from them. I hate people who breed from their pet dogs. The Law needs changing for neuturing at 6 months to become compulsary but it won't. Dogs from registered pedigree breeders should be the only ones to breed. If you get one of these pups you will have no idea on it's health or anything like that. I feel you wouldn't have it by next Xmas.

Please dont take one of these pups. It will encourage them to think random breeding is ok. There are huge numbers of puppies and dogs in rescue who desperately need homes. Even more so in the next few weeks as puppies who have been given for Christmas suddenly become inconvenient. I will declare an interest as I work with a local rescue and see some of the heartbreak.
I would also suggest leaving it till after Christmas as there is often a lot of disruption in homes at this time of year which does not help a dog settle.
  • I think if i was to be in your shoe's, I would report him!

Like i said earlier - A accident once maybe, But she's on her first litter? Thats not on, In fact, X breeding a staffy type with any large breed is giving her a date for death.

" I've never experienced an aggressive one... however I have experienced aggressive Staffies, so temperament of both mum and dad should be a huge factor in deciding whether to get one or not. "

I have a agressive staffy. Thanks to the morons that bred him, He has had the most upsetting start to life, However, I find it a little odd, That you own danes - But never experienced a agressive one.

(Please don't take that the wrong way - Just saying as a owner, I would have thought you may have done!?)

Please think long and hard about reporting him, After all he IS indangering the b.i.tc.h's life, everytime he is breeding!

Something I have to say here - to everyone that keeps on repeating "pls get a rescue dog" like some kind of a mantra...
Pls realise that not eveyone is ALLOWED to take on a rescue dog.
I have tried myself and was refused by every place I contacted as I was working and living in a flat.
So I got my Zara off Gumtree - and she is still with me, together with 4 kittens which again came from Gumtree as being in a flat AND having a dog I was not "alowed" a rescue kitten.

Some rescues have to rethink their rehoming policies - it is not just up to "normal people" to reduce the number of back street breeders, people WILL go out and get a dog from "somewhere" when what they would have preferred is not available for them for some reason or another....

    Rant over...

Totally agree & Yes i did advise to go to a rescue!

However, I no its not always poss to get a rescue animal & many of the rescues do bring it on themselves because they turn away good forever homes!

But..I would also promote decent breeders too! Ok, You might pay alot, but at least you know the parents are breeding for the best of that breed. Its not some poor animal being used over & over again as a cash point.

A good breeder will know the breed like the back of their hand. They will offer continued support, Many will even take the pet back should you not be able to keep them for any reason. I would just hate the OP taking on a pup who in a few months time could be a handful, Resulting in the pet to be taken to a rescue.

However - I do think to consider buying a pup of someone who is more interested in extra booze money then his OWN pets health to be a complete sham. He is very clearly a moron who needs to be educated or risk loosing his pets!

OP - Like i said above, I would report him...

The puppies are 4 days old so it would be after Xmas anyway, but I see your point, I don't agree with dogs as xmas presents etc.

He said end of january, but think that makes them 7 weeks old?? I thought 8 weeks was the recommended age.

Anyway, we will think about it in the New Year but won't be getting one of these puppies :)

Not quite sure why you question that I've never met an aggressive Dane - they are big, dopey softies. Any aggressive Dane would have been ill-treated in my experience - and that can happen to any breed. I've met a great many Danes - they are the sort of breed where you naturally gravitate towards other Danes owner's with the 'I have/used to have one of these' conversation. The nastiest thing I have ever seen a Dane do is wag his/her tail and reduce my ex to a sobbing heap on the floor due to the power/accuracy of the tail tip on a certain part of his anatomy... :rotfl::rotfl:

Just a question from me, though. Although I hate this type of back street breeder, what do you think they can be reported for? I'm not aware that this is against the law, morally wrong, sure, but still allowed under current legistlation.

I own 2 Great Danes and they are indeed, silly soppy lap dogs that like nothing better than to lie by your side/on your feet/on your bed, but they have been well trained, and that was darn hard work and yes we went through shoes/sofas beds etc, all to chewing. But I have never met an aggressive one either, and I have met 100's (literally) we do social walks periodically with up to 40 Danes at a time, and whilst there is the odd snipe (mainly entire males being bossy) none of them are what I would class as aggressive!
Saying all that, I wouldn't take on of these pups on at all, if only to discourage the very misguided owners from doing this again, and as someone mentioned above, giving birth to pups of this size could be very harmful to the Mum!

  • sazzicee this thread has opened up can of worms for you and lots of different opinions!
Regardless of the rights and wrongs, you may end up with one of the puppies especially if OH has his mind set and you have agreed.

If you do, please enrol for puppy classes these are important and a good way to socialise him/her with other dogs.
Invest in a cage/crate, a must. My Dane and Jack Russel both have cages which they sleep in at night or if I pop out the house etc. It reduces anxiety for them as they feel secure and I have never had anything destroyed.
Have boundaries. Any dog will lie on the furniture if you start off that way. My dogs don't even attempt although the Dane will "sit" on the chair like a human sometimes but I don't mind that too much!

Good luck in whatever you decide. Your friends are very irresponsible doing this, but these puppies need loving homes too.
