Kenwood or Kitchenaid or Magimix ?

I know there's a thread on here about which Kenwood but I want to get DD one of these three and can't decide which. I think she likes the Kitchenaid best (which of course is more expensive) but she does more chopping than cake making so I think a Magimix would be better. I don't really make cakes or bread in my Magimix - does anyone else ? It's a LOT of money to spend to get the wrong thing. Ideally she wants a thing to chop and grate, and to make occasional cakes, and liquidise soups etc. Or perhaps there's some other make she should consider ? HELP !

  • I have the Kenwood chef titanium-which has a food processor, and liquidiser attachment. Its great. Makes good cakes and AMAZING bread. I got that model so I could get rid of an old FP and liquidiser. The FP bowl is smaller than my old one, but it seems to do the job fine.

If a Kenwood chef is too much, try their Prospero (KM265). They are like a baby Chef. I've had one for a year and it does everything really well - kneads bread just fine, has a non-stick k beater for cakes etc chops, liquidises & even comes with a citrus press. I don't suppose it has quite the power or range of accessories of the Chef, but at around £110 on Amazon, its a complete bargain.

  • I wouldn't bother with the KitchenAid unless she's going to be doing a lot of whisking/mixing. I've got one with the standard bowl and mixers, meat mincer, fruit pulper and grater attachments. I've hardly used it as I don't bake a lot and, to be honest, the pulper attachment is a bit rubbish.

When I bake more I think it will be more handy. Oh, and on the grating front you have to attach the grater bit and then have to position a bowl underneath to catch all the bits as, unlike a food processor, they don't just go into an attached bowl.
  • I agree with mac2008- my mum replaced her chef after over 20 years with that model after her's broke- in general it doesn't feel as solid as my classic chef BUT it seems to do the job nicely and comes with a dedicated food processor attachment which works well.

The kitchen aid is similar to a chef in fairness- like your DD I really wanted one, mostly because of the appearance and how stylish they look, but for me it wasn't worth the inflated pricetag- although I'm sure people with one are really happy with it, I love my chef.

Have you considered, a magi mix or other food processor and then a kenwood kmix- they are quite retro looking and robust :)

The Kitchen Aid is more of a mixer and it sounds like your DD needs a processor rather than a mixer.

Sorry I can't help but I would like to share the advice on here if you don't mind:)

I'm lookng for something that I'll use almost completely for liquidising soup, any other function would be a bonus. Priorities are small (I want to be able to put it away in a cupboard not have it out permanaently) and easy to clean, preferably in dishwasher. I know if it doesn't fit these priorities I'll stick to my potato masher! TIA

I had a Moulineux for ages until the lid broke last yr, and it never got replaced till 8mths later. Now, I have an ancient but v good cond. Magimix that I found in a carboot (such a lucky find!!) for £2! it's been v good for chopping, but I can't really say effective it's been for cake-mixing as I'm not really a baker, but i think it does the job sufficiently.

When I was FP-free, I did ponder between the two high-end brands, partly with the popularity of the Kitchenaid's appearances on cheffy tv programmes with it's fashionable colours and sleek finish, but I still feel that Magimix has more mileage as it's been around for longer.

I'd look at a stick blender. Relatively small, can use it directly in the saucepan so less washing up. Some also come with attachments (whisk, mini food processor, etc) so can be pretty versatile.

Now for the OP... I'd rule out the Kitchenaid. They're very expensive and it sounds like your DD doesn't have much need for one anyway. I do make some cakes in my FP but they're not good for any that require air incorporated (e.g. sponges) so I'd probably rule out a Magimix as well if she wants to do both functions.

I'd lean towards getting a Kenwood Chef anyway, since some of the models already come with liquidizer and food processor attachments so you're getting the most value for money IMO. The FP attachment is usually smaller than a standalone FP though, so if she does a lot of bulk stuff it may be too small for her needs. You could look at getting both, which is what I intend to do at some point - already have a brilliant Kenwood FP, hoping to upgrade my basic hand mixer to a Chef for Christmas. :D

BTW, check out Amazon if you do end up going for the Kenwood. They usually have the best price that I've found - e.g. the basic chef is £140 on there (RRP £250) at the moment.

Thanks LondonDreamer - I was afraid someone might say she needed both a kenwood and a Magimix ! I have both myself but don't bake very much and hardly ever use the kenwood, which I got from e bay for v good price. She hasn't got room for both (as indeed I haven't the ££££s to get her both) so I think I'll go off and look at Kenwoods in JL as I suspect they're all much more sophisticated nowadays than mine is. If the FP and liquidiser attachments seem Ok then I suspect that's what she'll be getting (though from Amazon as you suggest). Thanks again !
