At what point are meter readings incorrect?
w/e 28th Nov: 25 cubic feet used (804 kwh). Programmer set to Heating: ON, Hot Water: 8pm-9pm daily.
w/e 5th Dec: 26 cubic feet used (836 kwh). Programmer set to Heating: 5:30-7:30, 4:00-12:00, Hot Water: 8pm-9pm daily.
Figure that one out... it took 32 kwh when I had it set to turn off during the day and overnight, i.e. for 10 hours as opposed to 24 hours. Nothing else changed besides the outside temperature
(which may have stayed the same too) .
These are actual figures.
Over 2 years there will be a point where no more heat can be lost and the temperature stays constant (in relation to outside temperature) therefore it cannot be used as a constructive argument when compared to one hour where (unless you have big heat loss problems) you will not reach the point where the amount of heat required to get back to temperature stops increasing... unless you are saying that the temperature inside the house will forever be decreasing over the 2 years...
I don't think so...didn't you notice this white stuff that's been falling?
The ambient temp is the single most important factor in your heating usage, and you've dismissed it as though it was not even relevant. Ambient temp higher than thermostat setting=no gas used, even if the sysytem is 'on'.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

I give up.
You have just proved that the laws of thermodynamics which scientists have relied upon for centuries, are incorrect.

OK let's bring outside temperature in to it, it was colder here w/e 28th Nov than w/e 5th Dec... and fyi, today is the first snow I've seen lately...Rich0

Quick question. Which is the best setting on the boiler to use this time of year? Mine has a dial 1 - 6.
Rikki
I have a old back boiler , it has a temperature stat on the boiler itself , in the form of a dial numbered 1 to 6 ,
The purpose of this stat is to adjust the boiler water temp , not the room temp as such, my room temp does that , but the 2 do work together so to speak
Mine is set at 3 , i found this to make the rads piping hot , when the room stat set at 20deg C ,
When i reduce the room stat to say 15degc , the rads are luke warm ,
this will depend on your current burner pressure also ( size of actual flame under your boiler water tank)

For the last few days I've left my heating on constant. My central heating runs on a back boiler with the hot water tank in an airing cupboard upstairs.
As a general rule, I have the hot water only choice on from waking up to going to bed. However, due to the weather being so cold & my house being rubbish at keeping in the heat, I've switched the boiler to heating & hot water constantly.
All my radiators have thermostats on them & I have them all turned to 3, I have a general thermostat in the passageway which is turned to 15 degrees. I find that this is just right temp wise.
I rent the property & recently had loft insulation fitted, but it hasn't made any difference really. Have called the landlord to check the seals on all my windows as although they are all double glazed, I can feel draughts coming through them.
I am hoping I don't get a major shock when the bill comes in, however, my account is always in credit, so hopefully that will cover it.0 -
Please please please can we have a sticky on this topic? It's becoming really tedious, especially during the cold weather...
They keep asking the same question because they never get the answer they want to hear.
When dealing with emotionally intelligent (i.e. not able to think properly) people you need more tact, and tell them they CAN save money if they keep the dial on 10 degrees. They will try it for a few days, get pneumonia, and realise the reason you have a boiler is because you don't want to be cold: something actually intelligent people already know from their Physics GCSE.0 -
Is it better to close the central heating in the room where it is not needed or does it not make any diffrence in terms of cost?
The bigger the space you heat, the more it costs.
Shut the doors in the room you are using and turn the heating up to what you want.
Turn down or off the rads in the rooms you are not using, and you will use less gas.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0
