The Pension People will send you a small pink ID card stating you are 60+

Enjoy It!.... You will wonder how you ever had time to go to Work

    Boo sucks - I'm 61! But I never got a pink card:-(.

Haven't seen it mentioned on the thread (could have missed it) that women don't pay NI contributions after 60 if still working. I've more or less stopped working, but it's nice to get that bit extra when doing odd jobs - especially if you can arrange hours around free travel passes - usually after 9.30.

I asked the Pensions people about an ID card and they said they stopped issuing it a few years ago. He suggested photocopying the relevant page in my passport (doesnt matter if it is out of date).

Luckily I live in London and get a freedom pass (bus and tube pass) which is probably acceptable although I havent been anywhere where they offer discounts for over 60s. As I never think of myself as being 60 it doesnt occur to me to look for a concession. Not very money saving is it!!

Me too! I shall be 60 next month. I shall still have to work but at least I shan't have to work a full week as the pension will help to provide a bit of income. Sadly we don't get bus passes down here but I think we can get into the cinema a bit more cheaply!

Free bus travel for all over 60's from next April. It was announced in this years budget.

You can get a senior railcard for travel on the train.

There is also a scheme for reduced fares on coach travel

    Hi Lolly

Mine is on the 6th so I'll reach it a few days before you will - I'll let you know if I feel any different!!

I must say that I'm really struggling with this getting older lark. Like you, I shall not go around advertising the fact that I am now officially an old person! Wherever did all the time go?

Have you ever read the poem 'Whem I am Old I Shall Wear Purple'? Another one I loved is 'Suddenly Sixty' by Judith somebody (see, my memory's going already  )
I quite often have a CRAFT day

    Hi jaybee

I'm also struggling with the idea of getting older. I'm going to be 70 on Wednesday this week. I can't believe it!! I don't feel like an old woman! What am I supposed to do/talk like/wear/look like?

Was talking to a lady after church yesterday. They all sing 'Happy Birthday to...' anyone who has a birthday in the coming week. There were 4 of us!! I thought they'd forgotten me when...it all started again, people looking in my direction, I blushed, and I thought 'I'm too old to blush!!'

A lot of the older women wear polyester, some look smart, others would look smart if they didn't have such an uneven hemline. I was there in my sleeveless top, long floral skirt, little bandanna (because I have alopecia) and everyone said 'you look so young'. Well, I was never a raving beauty, and all my best features have long gone - the waistline, the English rose complexion (working in the Middle East did it no good!) and now the natural-blonde hair going too. This type of hair doesn't go grey as darker hair does, what it does is to go very very thin, especially at top of head (male-pattern alopecia).

When I became 60 I was allowed to claim the bus pass, which then cost us £12 a year. I never used the bus enough times to recoup the £12! Now it's free, I still never use it.

Otherwise, life is good, we're comfortable, I'm 3 years happily into a second marriage after being widowed and made redundant in 1992. We have enough money to do everything we want to do. We're not worried by some of the things that older people seem to have on their minds, we enjoy each day and love spending time together.

    Best wishes

    Aunty Margaret
