Looking to buy a secondhand diesel car, due to budget (£1000 -£1500) it's likely to be a 99 - 02 and high mileage.

So does anyone have any experience of the reliability/likelihood of expensive fixes of the following vehicles/engines?

Peugeot 206 or 306 Hdi

Renault Laguna Dci 1.9 or 2.2

Vag Golf or A3 1.9 tdi (budget means these will be older higher mileages than previous two)

Basically the car needs to be a reliable + economical for daily commute and obviously would like to minimise the risk of expensive servicing/repairs if there are known issues with a particular engine/vehicle.

So if anyone got any experience to share?

  • I'd say for that ££££ any TDI VAG of that Vintage will have been run into the ground...

The 1.9DCI Renault apart from reading tales of woe on the t'internet I've no experience of...

The HDI Pug stuff I'm quite a fan of although I have no experience with the 1.4s.... The 2.0HDIs reasonably straightforward to fix and they'll give good MPG and tend to last well. We run loads of oldish french stuff in work and the HDIs are starting to come onto the fleet now... I've been running round in a 2001 HDI Xsara with 220K on it... Feels as tight as anything with half the miles different driver every day 7 days a week covering circa 100miles.... I'd clocked it when I filled it up to see what MPG it was getting... At 330Miles it was on half a tank and then somebody else filled it so I never got the true MPG figure.

The 90bhp HDis aren't DMF where most of the Pug 110Hdis are but dont listen to people claiming it's the end of the world if they go.

Also I would'nt listen to anyone prattling about it being french and bad build quality blah de blah

A colleague of mine has owned two Lagunas, both 1.9-litre DCis, and without many issues with them. I like Peugeot's diesel engines past and present, although, if you can find a good one for the money, I'd say a VW would be worlds apart!

I had a Pug 405 TD that ran to 240k miles.

Go for something slightly older, 2000 onwards sees the start of DMF and common rail injection systems. Both
of these add £200 or so onto the repair costs.

406 Diesels, Mondeo diesels with the old 1.8TD engine or MK3 Mondeo 2000/2001 TDDI not the TDCI engine.
I would only mention vectra's if i disliked you so rules them out. I sat in one once for about 20 seconds & thought
i hate this it looks horrible.
