Really upset with RSPCA

I posted on here in september about my missing cat 'Tails', some of you may remember how upset I was about it. (just looked for the thread about it, it appears to have gone??). Anyway as advised by the people on here I phoned around all the local vets/ gave in pictures of him and one of these included our local RSPCA.

Fastforward to yesterday and the RSPCA phoned me, they mentioned I'd been in contact about my missing cat at which point I got all excited thinking they had him or information on him. They then asked if I'd found him, after I said no, the man on the phone launched into an obviously scripted pitch to try and get me to donate to them!

I have no problem with them ringing me to ask for donations but they should in no way use my missing pet to guilt me into giving them money. I was gutted when they didn't have my little man :(

  • What a rotten thing to do! I thought at first you were going to say they were trying to persuade you to adopt a cat from them (which would have been tactless to say the least!) but that's even worse.

have you ever posted him/her missing on catchat.org and the national pet register also petsearchers all have thousands of cats on. I wouldn't donate to the Rspca ! They aren't very popular nowadays with their behaviour!
  • I work for the RSPCA and that call definately did NOT come from your local branch. It would have come from some cold calling centre. People expect so much from us, they lose a pet and hey the rspca must be able to find it, thats what they are there for surely? Life doesnt happen like that, im very sorry for anyone who loses their animals but we cant work wonders. The people i work with are very kind and caring, looking after animals that have been abused by people, 24 hours a day. As for any bad press, well to be honest the RSPCA is a charity and at the end of the day any animal we end up helping is a bonus, no one has a right to run us down, unless you are able to do the job yourself better.

Why are you taking this personally.

It does not matter where the call came from, they obviously had the information and should not have made a call like that,

This to my mind is happening far too often by charities as they are now employing people who get paid to raise money, and I for one do not like it, and the pushy sales tactics of some have actually stopped my donations in some cases.

You're totally out of order, matey.

  • Of course im not taking it personally, silly person. Im just stating a fact thats all. If we didnt have charities what would all the animals that are cruelly treated do then??????? In an ideal world we shouldnt have to have charities, for cancer research, child cruelty, animals cruelty. BUT its not an ideal world and all charities need to get money from somewhere. If you do not donate to charities i do hope you will never need to use one. Merry christmas.

I did not say that I do not donate to charities I am just more careful about the ones that I do donate to now.

I hope that you are not representative of the people who work at the RSPCA as your comments do them no favours.

Oh and a Happy New Year.

With regards from the "silly" person.

Mandy557, I really admire anyone who does your job and I say this from a position of someone deeply and both personally and previously professionally involved in animal welfare: I think that some of the way you are expressing yourself and justifying the specific actions and general complaint raised against RSPCA are not doing that organisation any favours and rather goes some way to confirm some people's opinion of the RSPCA as a self justifying organisation failing to learn from feedback of its shortcomings.

I dont denigrate the work done by the people like yourself who work at the grass roots level, you do a good job!
BUT - as the above post shows - yourhigher echelons are now alienating people!
Why? because they are so far up their !!!!! on fundraising they are becoming inhuman! also, those who phone in to help animals they see at risk are NOT taken seriously! Its very frustrating, and then we are not inclined to help you financially! I have had personal experience of this (two dogs left in a garage while owner went on two week cruise and because owner assumed I would feed them etc - which I did) RSPCA didnt want to know! what if I had not seen the note or was ill?) grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
I am NOT the only one with complaints about this!
People dont phone the RSPCA expecting them to actually go out and SEARCH for their dogs/cats but they dont expect to be solicited for donations either! shame on your organisation!

Solicit for donations by phone by all means but to mention the missing cat in that conversation was uncalled for and that is the point the OP is trying to make.

What is also uncalled for is for you to call anyone 'silly person' very unprofessional of you.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
