Garden Shed Recommendation

Hello,

I'd like to buy a new shed as we are buying our first house. We need to be able to store garden toys, gardening stuff and tools etc.

I have had a look online, and almost bought a Billyoh Lincoln.I decided against it, as the reviews are terrrible.

I have budgeted a maximum of £500, and would need to be at least 8x6. Has anyone bought a wooden shed that they can recommend? I want it to last a while. My dad is going to make the base, so that won't need to be included.

Thanks! Anwen

Stay away from Waltons. Many more bad reviews than there are bad. Shockingly poor quality and workmanship generally. Can only assume previous poster was lucky.

I would find a local carpenter and ask for a quote, they will build to what you want and usually to the material you ask.
    Kind Regards

Our B&Q shed is doing us proud, and I think our previous shed was from Aston Sheds, which is still standing and robust because OH lined it with plywood and other modifications, but I can't find a direct link to them now.

A shed is as good as you build it, and maintain it. ;)

Lol, absolutely not so in the case of waltons. ;)

If I can find the disk the images are on, I'll happily post the pics of the [STRIKE]shed[/STRIKE] firewood I bought from them, before I discovered the many negative reviews on the net.

The framing was so far out that the base wasn't able to be joined without alteration. The roof was cut short on one side, gaps were all over the thing, the quality of the wood was shocking with huge splits in it. I could go on.........

Buying from the Internet is fraught with potential problems, as many shed sellers are just middle men taking their cut and supplying from several sources. Unfortunately, if you want to be sure about quality, this means going out and looking at manufacturers in your local area, or at least a display site. It's the best way to ensure you don't end up with a load of firewood. And yes, driving around will add to the cost of the shed.:(

You will be looking at the quality of the wood, thickness of framing, how well it fits at the joints, whether it flexes easily, whether it has particle board floor and roof (bad) and if it has galvanised fittings (good.)

Here in rural Devon, I wanted a shed as a chicken house. There weren't many suppliers, and some even shared phone numbers with other businesses, which is a bad sign; i.e. sideline, or just another agent. Eventually, after a lot of strange phone conversations, I found South West Sheds in Bideford and, as they were 30 miles away, timed my visit with a supermarket shop. I was pleased I did though. One look at the product was enough, and with each shed being made to order, I was able to have some modifications without cost. The shed was delivered on time and, the most important bit, fitted together brilliantly. Maybe this is a bit hard to believe, but the instructions were spelled correctly and even made sense!:rotfl:

If anyone reading this is in my area, South West Sheds have a basic web site. The owner told me he often replaces Internet-bought sheds, or supplies wood so that they can be repaired. Like me, I'm sure he wouldn't wish to suggest they're all rubbish, just that he sees a lot of unhappy people who've used that method of purchase. I would guess his shed was about 20% more expensive than the cheapest on-line product of similar size, and I'd also bet it will last a lot longer too! :)

I wouldn't, especially if you think those two job descriptions are interchangeable.

There are things like specialist tools, jigs and economies of scale to consider, so employing someone who makes sheds etc every day is a safer route.

Wow thanks, yeh probably was lucky :rotfl: we bought a cheap playhouse from somewhere i can`t remember and it`s shocking,if it`s still standing at 3 years old it`ll be a safety hazard !!
