Should companies ask for your three digit security code?

Good evening everyone, hope you're safe and well there?

I'm asking this question on behalf of my mother as I'm staying at her house just now due to the snow and both my mother and father had a debate earlier on because one of my aunts who has special needs and is quite deaf uses a service called TextRelay to make calls to family/friends and to all sorts of different companies. She has a special kind of phone and she seems to type in what she wants to say but my mother was giving her a telling off earlier when we visited because we noticed on her screen that someone was asking for her credit card number which my aunt had given her and the person then asked for her three digit security code on the back of the card which we both thought was a little bit strange, should people ask for this? my aunt was adamant that she was giving this information to an operator or something but my mother says that nobody should ask for that information so what do we do? we'd hate to think someone is going to rob my aunt because she's very vulnerable, really lovely person and so trusting. Thanks everyone :)

    Hi,

My aunt wasn't buying anything though as she was calling her credit card company to check a few things on her account, or at least that's what she told us. Appreciate your help :)
  • My card provider have asked me for the 3 digit code before as part of a security check, I guess it's to prove that you actually have the card in your hand.

    Thank you Scottishblondie,

We just thought it was a bit strange for the operator as my aunt referred to asked for her security code whilst she was waiting for her call to be connected to an advisor. I guess that maybe we're just a little too protective of my aunt but I'm sure lots of other people would be like that too. I hope that it's nothing malicious and would hate to think my aunt is just giving out her personal details to everyone and anyone. Best wishes.

I work for an organisation where we have to take credit/debit card payments over the telephone for various services, and we cannot process the payment without the 3 digit code on the back of the card.
Debt free and staying that way!
  • If in doubt, do two things.

    1) Have someone call the bank in question directly, and ask if they would normally ask for the digits.
    2) If still in doubt, get the card cancelled and replaced.
