memory advice - increase ram?

Hi all,

Can I ask some advice please.

My Toshiba Satalite p10-304 came with 250MB 2700 ddr 333 200pin ram.

About a year ago I put in a second 250MB chip, it has two slots so is full.

Now, cashing in my Rpoints i have Amazon gift vouchers and have just bought a 1GB Kingston chip. Not cheap but points I had earnt and had nothing else I wanted,so all good.

My laptop will go to a max of 2GB, would I notice much difference from 1GM to 2GM? should I buy a second 1GB chip?

Instead I could pop one of the 250GB (also 333) in as you can mix and match fine.

But which is better, I have read although its OK to mix and match its still best to match the memory as closley as you can so while I have the chance to buy 2 identical chips I could but would I really benefit

In two minds if even putting the 250 in is a good idea if its not a perfect match and just stick at the 1GB and leave the other slot clear.

Really depends on what you're doing with the laptop - if you're using several system intensive programs at once, it may be a good idea, but otherwise, I'd say 1gb of RAM is plenty.

Why don't you stick with the 1gb stick and sell the other 2 x 256mb sticks on eBay?

Got 2GB in my laptop, but that's because I do s/w development and run Visual Studio and a virtual XP in VMWare for testing so RAM is good :)

You'll know if what you do is limited by RAM by looking at Task Manager, clicking on Performance tab and checking the Commit Charge info. Compare the "Total Physical Memory" to the "Total Commit Charge" (the amount of memory actually in use) and "Peak Commit Charge" (the most ever needed). If you are using a lot more memory than you have actual RAM installed in the system, then you need benefit getting 2GB.

Thanks guys I think I will sell them on ebay.

Might just see how it goes once I have the first 1GB in, I think it uses a lot and struggles when I edit movies and dv content.
