Arrange own workmen or wait for loss adjuster?

Another insurance newbie question - Aviva is the insurer if it makes any difference.

I've had a leak fixed under my home emergency cover. My insurance company would like me to find some contractors to fix the damage and then claim the costs off them. They claim to have a huge number of claims going through at the moment and this would prevent delay.

My concerns are:

1. If everyone is busy, I'm going to struggle to find competent workmen.

2. I would have to arrange everything myself, not sure I would have the time.

3. I'm concerned if the amount required to fix the damage goes over the £1k they say they will happily pay, it will be a struggle to get a refund of the monies paid out.

4. I'm not actually sure the full extent of the damage. The Home Emergency company also damaged a number of items to fix the leak that will need resolving.

So far I've said I'll wait for the loss adjuster, however, the damp smell is quite strong and at the very least, the house needs drying out ASAP.

OK, so I sound like an over-anxious ninny but I really could do without being screwed over *again*. Have had horrendous bother with builders, flu and now this! :rotfl:
