wireless printer

Please could someone help me and answer what I am sure is a basic question?

I am looking at getting my son a wireless desktop printer for Christmas and am thinking of getting the epson Stylus SX515W.

My son is in halls at University and has internet access provided - he connects his laptop using a cable provided in his fat into a socket in the wall.

Hi laptop is wireless and connects fine to our wireless router here at home, but he doesn't use the wireless capability when at UNI. I just want to be sure that this printer (or any other wireless printer) will connect to his laptop wirelessly when he is at UNI as there is no wireless router and no wireless network.

Why the need for wireless ? For a student in halls (having had 2 of my own go through it) I would be looking for something small and with cheap ink available.

He could probably set up an ad-hoc network between the laptop and the printer, but I bet he will find it much easier to use it connected by a USB cable.

I would by the non-wireless equivalent, and use the money saved to buy him some spare ink & good quality paper (for all those essays).

Hi i bought a wireless printer for my daughter at uni,she said wireless signal not strong enough so couldnt connect wirelessly (prob not done it correctly).Anyway i purchased a cable from amazon for little more than £1 delivered and she just connects her laptop when she needs to print off any work.

Thanks for the quick answers - looks like non wireless would be the safer (and cheaper) option.

Id buy decent inks but forget buying good quality paper, the students arent marked for using good quaity paper, id have thoguht paper from tesco or asda eg the £2 jobby would be sufficient

cheap paper from the likes of tesco and asda will not do your printer any good just open a pack of cheap paper and see the dust that is in the paper this dust helps to screw up your printer, all ways use good quality paper to prolong the life of your printer.

Just to reconfirm i've tried to make an adhoc connection while on a school network and it is very tricky to do and involves a lot of messing about when a simple usb will suffice

In regards to paper, when I mark if I receive something on cheap paper it feels like whoever has produced it has got less pride in their work so an investment in good paper and good quality inks can tip the scale.
