Can someone please help me, I could scream/cry with frustration:(.
Set up OH's new laptop for him to use abroad. Now, I'm not the most techie minded person so it took me days, and I was really pleased with myself.
Everything was fine while he was away and he used it on a local network through their modem.
Now that he's come back, it will not connect via our modem at home . It still recognises the modem and still shows the BT Boradband dial up box when you try to connect to the internet, but when you click on Connect, it just keeps showing 'Unable to Establish a Connection'
I have looked through all the settings on my own laptop and have altered anything on the other one to match but still no connection.
Am I missing something really obvious?
Please help me before I take to drink!!!!! Thanks

I would delete the existing connection and set it up again. He may have altered a number of settings you're unaware of.0

Not giving a "no dial tone"?
Does this means it's dialing but not getting in?
If you have a phone listen to what is being dialled.
Check the phone and modem options in the control panel,
make sure its not dialling extra numbers0 -
moob as a last resort was going to try that but as I said I'm not techie minded and it took me forever to do it last time. If I do this will it definitely override whatever the problem is now?0

No theres a dialling tone ok,the same one that appears on my own laptop but comes up with 'Unable to establish a connection' after its tried dialling. The connection and modem work ok on my laptop so there doesnt appear to be anything wrong withe the actual connection.
ok checked in the phone & modem options (didnt even know this bit existed. There's a modem installed that I dont recognise but no sign of the household one so I've changed the status on that from 'functional' to 'Not functional'and now when I try to connect, the broadband connection dial up box is different - still says unable to establish a connection but now looks as if its not even dialling.
Is there any (simple! ) way I can change the household modem to the default one used?0 -
Is it an ADSL external USB modem?
What make?
In internet options, connection, is the correct modem set as default?
Is your user name and password (if required) entered correctly in connection properties?Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0 -
Yes its a ADSL external USB modem.
Checked where you said, and it's set as the default modem ok.
Yes user name and password are entered correctly.
The modem is definitely working ok cos I'm using it just now on my laptop.
Thanks for the suggestions though
