freezer broken, to claim or not to claim?

Options
Woke up this morning to find that our freezer had unexplainably broken. All of the food is ruined, including the christmas food we've recently bought.

In addition, the water from the freezer has damaged the laminate flooring.

No idea what is up with the freezer, possibly the thermostat?

We are with ehome insurance, so I am wondering - is it worth claiming? It's a £60 excess which isn't too bad.

Really need a freezer like, today - to re-do xmas shopping and baby meals. Will the home insurance pay out if we buy the freezer and get a receipt?

Don't mind waiting for the floor - but we need a freezer urgently.

Never claimed before so don't know how it works or what to do really.

Ring your insurer and find out what you need to do, and whether you've got cover for the food. It may be that you need to buy a new freezer from one of their chosen shops, i'm surprised your food has defrosted that fast, do you not have someone who you can give your frozen food to?

Insurance providers usually have special deals with electrical appliance providers whereby they get huge discounts - when we claimed for our TV last year they provided a replacement directly, when the Laptop was replaced they sent me Curry's vouchers - again presumably because they get a really good discount from that provider - I would therefore say that they would be unlikely to reimburse you if you just go out and buy one - can you borrow one whilst you wait to ring them tomorrow?

    thanks for replies.

We think the freezer may have broken earlier than we think, we haven't been in it since we did the shopping on friday. But didn't notice water til today.

The floor needs replacing too - will somebody be coming to inspect it? And will they pay someone to replace it, or will we need to lay it ourselves?

We can't borrow a freezer as we live 2 hrs from our family/friends and don't know anyone locally.

Someone could come and inspect it, the insurer will let you know when you ring them, depending on the cost of your claim. You would normally get insurance cover for someone to come out and lay the floor. Again, they might use a specific company or give you vouchers, or money less the 60.00 excess.

Have you got your freezer covered under a separate insurance policy as normal house insurance will cover the loss of food but not the replacement of a freezer.
