My 16yr old daughter came back from town yesterday and had been signed up to a Lovefilm subscription by a persistent sales person in Westfield Shopping Centre. She was told that it was easy to cancel online and no money would leave her account until February 2011 as this was a 'first 2 months free' deal.
She gave all her details as she felt pressured and didn't want to be rude (!), thinking she could just cancel when she got home. But of course it's not that simple - the website just gives a phone number (admittedly a freephone no.) to call. Anyway, I called the number and eventually got through to Shobnah who was very difficult to understand, and complained that they had signed up my 16yr old daughter when it clearly states on their website that you need to be 18yrs to have a Lovefilm account. She said she would cancel the account but would we like to keep it until Feb 2011 as £4.99 had already been taken from my DD's account!
I don't think these sales people should be allowed to get away with telling blatant lies just to get a sale and I can't believe they don't check a young person's age. Still, this has served as a lesson to my DD and I'm sure she won't be signing up to anything in the street again.

Yes your DD has learnt a lesson which is to say no, it doesnt matter whether it feels rude to say no, in any case the rep should have asked if your dd was 180

The same company has a stand in Northampton town centre, they are another bunch that dont like it when you say NO!! they tend to try to follow you until they eventually get the message and jump into someone else's path.
I have found a very effective way to deal with these people and other chuggers that block your path in order to get you to sign up,that is continue walking and say absolutely nothing to them, they do get the message and leave you alone...
The only other problem that you then have is that they have them spread up along the full length of the high street so you know you are going to bump into another one, just do the same thing and hopefully they will leave you alone.
Valuable lesson your DD has learned, good luck.Forum spellcheckers are the pitts.0 -
Best way to stop them is to say you are already a customer! The 16 year old being signed up is clearly a breach of Lovefilm's own terms and conditions so fight for that money back.0

Or say you're a customer, but thanks to their rudeness/persistence you will now be cancelling and going to Blockbuster/Empire DVD rental!0

yeah that's the best way. They were trying to sign folks up in Victoria Centre recently, I could tell they were going to be the kind who wouldn't take no for an answer and hassle me so I just smiled and said I was already a member. I might actually sign-up at some point since our local rental store closed down...it's just a bit more awkward as you can't go out and rent something that day on a spur of the moment thing.0 -
My daughter did this too however here's a word of caution, I went down to see the guys in Northampton who signed her up and they showed me that when you enter the details for the service it asks you 3 times if you are over 18, I think our kids have obviously said yes. They seemed like nice guys actually and I think it's a bit hard on them to have a go because your daughter thought it was rude to say no, if she continues with that policy she might get in some real trouble. lol0

They stand in Eldon Square in Newcastle as well - I told em I already had an account (which is actually true) and they still wanted to sign me up to 'upgrade' me. I obviously said no.
They stopped my friend who was with her elder sister who's in her mid 30's and is a very well respected woman because of her job, they started trying to sell to my friend, then her sister interjected politely with 'She will think about it'. Lovefilm Man turns round to the older sister and said 'Hey girlfriend, we're not talking to you!'. (Still horrified at this story and you would be too if you knew the sister! She's lovely but you just don't mess with her!) Cue older sister grabbing my friend by the arm and marching her off.
You just wouldn't say that to a potential customer would you?!Professional Photographer with a love of bargain hunting.. Been a moneysavingexpert since 2006 :-D

These sorts of salespeople don't listen.
