Airport Closure and Cancelled Flights

My flight from Dublin Airport was cancelled on Thursday whilst I was at the airport waiting for the flight.

The earliest departure was given as Sunday night (today).

I have had to pay for three nights accommodation, food, drinks, travel from the airport etc, and not sure what I can claim for, what will be from the airline and what will be through travel insurance.

I also have train tickets from the airport back home, but by the time we are due to land there will not be any trains running. Will I be entitled to claim for taxi fare home?

I have kept as many receipts as I can, though things like extra toiletries and drinks etc may not be classed as refundable.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

The airline is responsible for accomodation, travel to and from that accomodation, food and drinks. Not sure about toiletries and such (I doubt that). You will need to claim those from the airline under the EU directive 261/2004. Make sure all reciepts are kept, and the expenses should reasonable.

They won't be liable for any train or taxi fares, their contract is to deliver you to your destination airport.
  • Thanks for your reply. I am back at home now, thank goodness!!

Thought we would never get back as our new flight was delayed as well, but only for 90 mins this time.

When the airline states 'reasonable costs', would they argue with hotel and food bills? I was so worried about these that we only had breakfast at the hotel and one other meal each day, with house wine between us. I was not sure whether I could claim for lunch and drinks as well. Would we need receipts for taxi fares, as I cannot find one of them.

As for taxi fare home, I was hoping I could claim this back under the duty of care clause. I had return train tickets that I could not use as the next train was the following day, and the only other alternative would have been a taxi home or another night's hotel accommodation. Would they take this into consideration, as I was told that I had to take the Sunday night flight as the only option.

Also, can I claim loss of earnings? I was due back into work on Saturday, and my OH on Sunday, so we have both lost out.

I have contacted my travel insurance company who say we are entitled to up to £100 each for the cancellation and delay, which is good news.

    Thanks again for any help.

cklareski, unfortunately their liability for your welfare ends when they deliver you to the airport that was your final destination, so no taxi fares / train fares once you arrive back into the destination airport.

neither will they cover for loss of earnings etc.

I thought that may be the case. If I could have got a flight this morning rather than last night it would not have cost me taxi fares, but would have cost them the extra night's accommodation!!

Also, I was told that there were only three seats left on last nights flight, and not looking good for any others in the next few days, however there were at least 15 seats empty on the plane. Strange!

Probably no shows - and too late to fill them
  • Sorry to ask again - still unsure about a couple of things. Got all the receipts I can find in front of me and the travel insurance claim form.

I think it is bad that I cannot claim for transfer from the airport home, I would not have chosen to travel on a Sunday due to trains not running, but I had to take this flight or have a refund of £10 airfare.

Also, would Ryanair pay for taxi fare from hotel to Dublin airport? The buses were not running to schedule so this was the best option. I do not have a receipt to claim tho.

I am hoping that they will honour a glass of wine with a meal, as the price of soft drinks is not that much cheaper. Its not as if we were out on a bender - we just wanted to spend as little money as possible and get home as soon as possible.

Sorry to keep asking questions - want to fill out the forms correctly and get the money back asap.

    Thanks

Their responsibility is getting you to the destination airport. Granted its not your fault you missed the train. Its not Ryanair's either though. They put you on the next flight they could. The delay claim from your travel insurance is meant for these incidental type of expenses.

They are liable for transfers between the airport and the accomodation. However, if if it is transport not arranged by them that you are claiming for, I think it is reasonable for them to ask for a receipt. I don't think Ryanair will pay up without a receipt.

If the wine is receipted with the meal I cannot see why they wouldn't pay it. Its a perfectly reasonable request.
