recommendations for leggings/jeggings

Being thoroughly behind trends (and having awful recollections of wearing leggings when 13/14 years old) I think that maybe its time to consider them. But is it a no no to wear if I'm a size 14? I have always had quite chunky legs, and am feel very overweight at the moment, but am working on that!

I have got some lovely longer tunics and just ordered a couple of sweater dresses that would look a bit odd with jeans underneath (I find the waistband of my skinnies very bulky) so I was thinking I have to take the plunge.

Can anyone recommend a good place to buy them-I think I would initially just like a pair of denimy coloured ones, or maybe black. Am happy buying online or we have a good selection of shops in my town, but no primark

Thanks.

I'm in my mid 40s and my lower half is a size 14 and I wear leggings with sweater dresses and tunics. I feel better in those than in conventional jeans and shorter tops. Also if you're wearing skinny jeans your legs can't be that bad...skinny ones wouldn't go near me! I wear mostly black and usually wear them with boots with a heel - make the legs look longer and gives a better shape. I just got some leggings from Next which have been my fave pair so far - they're not as thin as some

I don't think leggings are a no-go if your a size 14+, but I think you'd not be doing yourself justice to wear them without a tunic style top or long jumper- there are fantastic curves on women who are not stick thin (I know, I have them :D) but leggings are just something that basicly (gonna sound crude here!) just don't flatter the crotch nor the thigh area...

I'd say go with leggings if you feel comfortable with them, but personally, I stick to wearing tops or dresses which are able to cover my bottom and found that for me the best flattering legnth is my mid thigh and I'd expect it was one of those things that was different for each women.

For stores and places to find them, I'd say Gap was the best in terms of staying power (they do not fall down) and they seem to last a little bit longer. I have found M&S, Topshop/Arcadia/Dorothy Perkins etc and River Island make the type that fall down as the day goes on. Primark? don't even g there! It would seem you do get what you pay for!

I want to try Uniqlo myself as they have new heat-tec type denim and trousers but I worry about the stretch. If I had money as no object, I'd try places like Levis for skinny jeans as I'd trust they'd be made with much better fabrics.
  • I am another one who is totally scared by leggings! I think they look beautiful on some (young and skinny!) people. I am only 28 so could pull them off age wise I guess! But I am bigger than you (18)

I bought a lovely tunic top, and some biker boots back in Sept and I did try on some leggings with them but I felt a bit naked and silly. So I bought a pair of black skinny jeans. they are a very stretchy denim so don't look like jeans IYKWIM. They were from Dorothy Perkins, about £25. They are so comfy, and have become a staple in my wardrobe!

  • Sainsburys have some great denim leggings in a few colours and with 25% off til tomorrow they are only £9 a pair. They are quite thick fabric, more jean than legging, but very stretchy and pretty flattering I think, can you tell I bought some last week and am rather pleased with them?!

  • Primark leggings usually a no go for me, however there jeggings denim ones, black, blue and grey are amazing stay up, wash well and give good shape... i love them :):)

Also Primark have these leggings sold in a cardboard packet (like tights) and are called 'shape' leggings, they have a little control in them and are great at holding you in, may take a little wriggling to get into as they have a bit control in them but are worth it... they are a little like opate tights but have no see through and are actually leggings....

they are amazing and I LOVE THEM........ are they really make you look amazing as they have a bit hold but arent painful uncomfortable to wear and at £4 are a steal, they have them in black, burgandy, demin blue and navy i think..... give them i try they are truly my best find :):):)

If you wear skinny jeans but aren't 100% comfortable with your legs, then go for thicker jeggings that are a stretchy denim material rather than a denim printed jersey legging. It's much more flattering, stops any leg jiggle when you walk, but make sure you wear them high on your waist to minimise any bulges they create. "treggings" are also an option, slightly more formal but again generally of a thicker material that's more flattering.

  • I bought my first pair from Tesco for around a fiver and are really comfy, wash good, stay in shape etc. although will have to get another pair as caight them in my washing basket and caused a couple holes
  • Next jeggings are great quality, they wash really well.
Matalans black leggings are also quite nice and wash well.

Just make sure you try them on to make sure the colour of your skin isn't showing through, like it did for me in Topshop. Horrid.

  • It depends what you wear them with and getting the correct size. If you find a really good pair of leggings, they can sometimes make you appear slimmer. I have bought mine from Dorothy Perkins and Peacocks in the past
