Why do contractors charge so much??

Is this quote reasonable or a total ripoff?

Refurb of derelict house in NW London

1. Remove 2 chimneys on ground and first floor - £6,000
2. Gut small toilet and tile, decorate and replumb - £2000
3. Knock bathroom and WC together and tile, plumb bath, wc, shower, sink - £7500
4. rewire 4 bed house first fix - £7500
5. Remove boiler/tank/old pipes fit new boiler, cylinder, pipes £7500

(All quotes labour only - materials supplied by customers)

    all those prices are twice the going rate up here in the NW.
    its a price to pay for living in the smoke.
    Get some gorm.
  • Get another quote, plenty of companies out there.

    Having said that, there is a lot of work there so it is not going to be cheap.

    There's not enough information here to say if this is sensible or not. On the face of it these are big numbers so as a customer I'd want a bit more detail for what they are doing for these large sums of money.

    Is this a big building contractor who is then subcontracting the trades and project managing for you or is this a builder doing everything himself?

    The difference could be 100% in cost.

    It's a small contractor who I suspect needs to maintain an affluent lifestyle and thus not unlikley there;s a substantial markup.

    All the figures are way out even for London.

    Theres a few geniuses on here , if they are capable of giving an answer to the OP's question with the information given then they truely are Masters of Construction.............Do they "use the force"?

    Example: Remove 2 chimneys ground and 1st floor £6k : whats the access like?, how many skips? any steelwork reqd,Are they to be taken out above roof line and reinstate roof?,Reinstate joists and flooring around Hearth??.Come on guys there are so many variables.
