I'm not sure what happened with the original card application. My understanding is that it got lost in the system so to speak for such a long time that it became invalid.

HSBC did try to transfer the funds back to the original card. I recieved a phone call from the original card company asking me to explain the situation. After I explained it they said they would not authorise the transfer back so HSBC were still out of pocket.

There are so many twists in this story that I haven't gone into but one of these was that after a few months a first payment came out of my bank account. I presumed that was the start of the repayments but then the payments stopped. When I queried the payment they couldn't tell me who the payment was to
