The fact that your child hasnt been taught not to touch things is your fault and no-one elses.

Why should someone have to make changes to their home just because you can't control your child when visiting them?

Ummmmm , i seem to remember all three of my own kids being 2 years old....

Funnily enough i never had to pay to replace anyones fireplace !

Im not for one second saying that any of my children were angels but they are all teenagers now and have respect for not just their own home and belongings but other peoples too !

Out of curiousity , where was you wife whilst your 2 year old was lifting this heavy object ? Wasnt she watching him closely enough ?

Are you for real ? You would seriously expect your friend to re-arrange her home just because your 2 year old is coming to visit ?

You know . at 2 years old a child understands what you are telling them so maybe the fact is that you dont discipline your child enough ?

You have blamed everyone else for what your child has done except the child themselves !!!!

Surely this is what contents insurance with accidental damage is for ?

IF the OP can afford it they should obviously offer to pay. We don't know the Op's financial situation and it may cause considerable hardship for them to pay and personally if It was me I'd think nothing of claiming on my policy- especially if I knew the other party were struggling financially.
  • So you would claim through the insurance and have to pay the policy excess and also have to declare the claim and pay the extra premium for the next 3/5 years just because a child run wild in your home whilst visiting ?

    cheers for that

So what exactly did you make the original post for if it wasn't to get others opinions? You don't like my opinion? Don't post the question.

Your 2 year old damaged property because they weren't properly supervised in someone elses house. It's not the childs fault, it's not the owners of the houses' fault, it's yours and you can't handle the fact for some bl**dy reason. Pay up to have it fixed and watch your child in future.

Just thank god it didn't fall on their foot. What would you be doing then, suing?

if its just a small chip on the fireplace can't it just stay like it is? At the end of the day as long as it doesn't make a huge difference and isn't going to injure people in the future then surely it can be left to be

It depends on how you view things, if someone damages your property do you leave it or have it repaired or replaced but the person that damaged the item should offer to pay the costs even if it's their child. It's the right thing to do.

If it was my house and there was a toddler going about I would move ornaments out of reach of small hands. Stands to reason. It's all well saying that they should learn not to touch, but they are just 2 years old after all - not the most obedient of people!

If I was in someone's house and my toddler broke something I would offer to pay, but if something got broken in my house by a toddler I wouldn't ask the parents to pay. I'd be glad if they bought a replacement off their own backs though. It's not something I would want to make a friendship awkward over.
