I want to buy a new printer.
I want good quality printing with cartridges that last a long time not costing too much.
Is this an impossibility?

It is if you dont want colour. If most of your printing is black and white go for a mono printer, brother are good.0

If its just letters, web page print outs where your not bothered about the lack of colour then definitely go for 23n1th suggestion,0

I had a Canon colour inkjet printer and was really pleased with that until it died after 8 years' loyal service. I replaced it with an HP all in one as I wanted a front loader, and HP seems to be the only firm making those. The machine itself is very good but I am horrified by the running costs. It takes HP 364 ink tanks and was subsequently told they only hold 3ml of ink, or 6ml for the XL version. The HP inks cost £8 upwards so I would not recommend an HP for low running costs. Next time I would go back to Canon or maybe Epson.0

Epson. Most makes will sell you a cheap printer with ink costing more than perfume, so don't take any good looking offer without looking at compatible cartridge availability and price. Epson cartridges are often very cheap on the compatibles market, as little as 79p each in fact, but many epson systems also have after market CISS systems available.
CISS are continuous ink supply systems, so dummy cartridges which connect via tiny pipes to big reservoirs of ink. I buy that ink then for 69p for 100mls, less in the sales sometimes. Compared with 8 quid for 3mls I think its a bit of a bargain! Do a search for CISS and the name of any printer you're considering, see what's available. Prices for CISS range from under a tenner to nearly a ton, so choose wisely! I don't know if supplier names are allowed on the forum here, and I'm sure it'll be deleted if not, but buytech.co.uk have some total bargains on the CISS and cartridge fronts sometimes.0 -
http://www.ijtdirect.co.uk/?sct=dell1320cn Costs £133 but comes with 2 full sets of toner which will do 2000 pages per set

Quite a reasonable price for a colour laser.0 -
