Would like to have another phone socket fitted...

I've just recently changed from Virgin to Sky as my telephone provider. When the engineer came he activated the original telephone socket which is in the hallway. I would much prefer to have the telephone in the front room so I've just rung Sky to ask how much to move the socket and the guy said it's not a service they offer and to ring a telephone engineer.
Before I start ringing round engineers (not that I could find one who is local) does anyone have any idea how much this would cost me?
Many thanks

Sky could organise it for you, but clearly can't be bothered. It is a service supplied by Openreach. However the cost might be a litle prohibitive - from memory you could end up paying between £200 and £300. A local engineer might well be able to do it more cheaply. Assuming an hour's labour, you could be looking at circa £60.
However you might - or might not
prefer to invest the money in some cordless handsets instead achieving the same and you can always take them with you if you move, supplying the same solution should you have the same issue there. 0 -
There's a bloke in my town that's been advertising for years at £15-25/socket.
Or, you could get a cordless system with two handsets and plug that into the hallway and have the 2nd unit where you like.0 -
As the OP said he wants to move the master socket, then this should only be done by BT/Openreach, adding an extension socket can be done by others, but not moving the master....as already said Sky could organise this, as you cannot call O/R yourself, but they obviously dont want to, if you are on WLR Sky (and not full LLU) then OR charge the service provider £49 what Sky would charge if they could be bothered organising it would be up to them0

I've got a cordless handset with phones in other rooms... it's because there is nowhere to put the phone but on the radiator (very small and stange layout to hallway) so that was my reason for wanting the socket in another room. Part of the problem is that the socket is one end of the hall and the plug socket the other and if I use extension leads it will mean trailing wires... Oh well maybe a radiator shelf is the answer! lolLight Bulb Moment 4th January 2009 :eek:Started DMP 1st April 2009 :ADMP mutual support thread member: 267 :j0

LLU = Local loop unbundling http://www.ofcom.org.uk/static/archive/oftel/publications/broadband/dsl_facts/LLUbackground.htm
WLR = Wholesale Line Rental.0 -
You could buy a telephone extension lead and run it to wherever you wish.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

I had an short extension from the master socket fitted recently (same room) and it cost me £30.
If you cant find a local phone engineer some electricians will fit an extension.0 -
Most, I would think. After all, that kind or wiring is standard on 'new builds' (as, sometimes, is ethernet, burglar alarm and smoke alarm cabling) these days.OldGreyFox wrote: »I had an short extension from the master socket fitted recently (same room) and it cost me £30.
If you cant find a local phone engineer some electricians will fit an extension.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
