Another phone survey scam?

Got home to find message on answer machine - woman with Scottish accent saying she was from energy company (couldn't make out name) doing a survey... prize draw... blah, blah.... If you don't want to take part, press 9 and we won't contact you again. It was too "tidy" to be a live person, suspect a recording.

Instinct took over - deleted message, certainly wasn't going to press 9. However, did call 1471 and found the number there. 08450 304400, which doesn't show up on Saynoto0870 or through Google.

At the back of my mind seem to recall a warning that dialling 9 puts you on to a premium rate number. I'd appreciate confirmation and, if I'm right, doesn't hurt to repeat the warning here!

There was a thread somewhere about this, although I can't remember where. If I recall correctly, it was said that pressing 9 allows scammers to [insert horror story here].

It was a hoax. What it does do however, is confirm that the line is live and that you will respond. Thus, pressing 9 effectively guarantees more nuisance calls.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Thanks for the clarifications. At least I was right to ignore the 9 :)
