WEP to WPA

I remeber reading somehwere that the standard encryption set up on your router is usually wep which isn't very secure and that you should change the settings to wpa instead.

I use a wireless Thomson router which allows me to connect to my windows laptop, my mac desktop and android phone. Can anyone provide an easy set of steps t follow to change to wpa?

Thanks!

first log into the router to see which one you are using now.

if it is WEP then connect your laptop to your router via ethernet and turn off wireless on your laptop, then change WEP to WPA (if WPA2 is there then do that one as that is even better) type in a new as long as you can and as random as you can password, click save, then disconnect your laptop from the router, turn on wifi and search for your wireless and join using the password you have just set it up with.

that is a basic guide to it, also it would be good to know what OS you are using?

Firstly, does your router support WPA? The manual will tell you.

If it supports it you want WPA-AES, TKP is not as secure.

Neither has been cracked nor likely to be in the near future. AES is not supported by all devices whereas TKIP is.
  • Definitly use WPA AES as TKIP isnt as secure anymore as researchers have managed to crack it.

Pretty sure I mentioned if it was supported use it. AES is superior to TKP and AES unlike TKP hasn't been cracked.

I'm pretty sure they have all been cracked now, only WPA2 AES PSK is impossible to crack if the hacker does not know the PSK, but if he knows the PSK and joins the network then it is possible to snoop the traffic of that network.
