There are two variables that affect your situation. The first is weather. However it seems that next week will be fine, very cold, but better in terms of snow etc.
The second is the Spanish strike. The honest answer here is no-one knows. The strike currently running wasn't official, or notified. They are liable to do it again. That said, it seems the Spanish government are starting play hardball, trying to get legislation passed meaining any controller not presenting themselves for work will be arrested and prosecuted, maybe even being thrown in prison! (not sure how succesful that would be, if all your ATCs end up in prison, you still have no-one to control air traffic?!)
Best advice, monitor the media, and regularly check your airline and airports websites.0 -
I think you will be fine..
They need to send the aircraft out to bring people back..
Empty Out - Full Back..

there will be delays but the king of spain has empowered zaptero to use the military ATCs to cover those on strikeI

the army has gone in and taken control of air traffic according to BBCNEws 24.
Good Luck - it might be an idea to pack an inflatable pillow and a little blanket in your case, just in case, and please make sure you have enough toiletries and spare undies with you, wipes etc. in case you do get stuck - we had not taken any toiletries or spare undies in our carry on luggage and ended up stuck in Newark last year with no change of clothes - not all airports have showers or sell pants, believe it or not!
Go prepared, even if it means leaving a few extra clothes at home - hopefully you won't need it, but you have it should the need arise.
Good Luck - hope you get there without trouble. We are flying out later this month - bit worried about the weather here, can't help looking at the weather for Tenerife - it's just lovely at the moment.:DMember of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Not strictly the situation. There has been a Royal Decree signing control of the Spanish Air Traffic Control system to the military. However this includes the air traffic controllers. So the Spanish controllers are technicaly now military personnel; there are military people at all ATC centres overseeing things. They have to go to work, or face charges, and potentially imprisonment for what would essentially be desertion/abandonment of duty.
Kind of solves the problem, but is one hell of a statement on employee relations and rights!
The military controllers would not have the experience or qualifications to run the Spanish ATC system. Totally different jobs.0 -
Thanks for that.... a bit clearer now.
They also said on the news it was a mass "sickie" that they had all phoned in sick because they werent' allowed to hold a wildcat strike there were laws in place meaning they had to provide cover etc...Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Its a pretty grim situation, and has been developing all year. And its not how its being reported. Its not all about pay, and the salaries reported by the press are not acurate either. It does appear that it was a mass sickie and not an official strike, I guess they felt its the only option left to make their point. The important thing is that the qualified and experienced ATCs are back in the seats and doing the job. Against their will, and forced to be military personnel. But they are there for now. I doubt very much this is the last we hear of it though.0 -

Don't worry.... they can't strike again. Spanish ATCs are being forced to work by the Spanish military. If they fail to turn up to work they will be arrested and potentially prosecuted for abandonment of duty.
Problem solved
